Cannabis for Seniors

With cannabis products becoming more popular, people of all ages are looking to try them out. Older adults in particular may be interested because of the potential benefits of cannabis, which may include improved rest and relief from chronic pain and anxiety. In fact, one study done at the UC San Diego Health Clinic found that, of patients who used cannabis, 61 percent initiated use after the age of 60. Findings suggested that these patients were looking to use cannabis to relieve symptoms related to medical conditions, rather than simply for recreational use.Person holding hemp leaf

Types of Cannabis: Delta-9 THC, Delta-8 THC, and CBD

Delta-9 THC is the most commonly known form of cannabis and is known to cause a “high” feeling. Some states have legalized the use of Delta-9 THC for medical or recreational use. Two other types of cannabis readily available in markets that may not legally allow medical or recreational cannabis are Delta-8 THC and CBD. This is because both contain less than 0.3 percent of Delta-9 THC, which makes them federally legal according to the 2018 Farm Bill. Delta-8 THC is similar to Delta-9 THC in that it produces psychoactive effects, or feelings of a “high.” This can also include feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and a mood uplift. CBD, on the other hand, does not produce a “high.” Instead, it provides no intoxicating effects, but may provide feelings of relaxation, pain relief, and improved rest.

  • Chronic pain – As you get older, pain can become more common, and can lower one’s quality of life. Both CBD and THC (Delta-8 and Delta-9) have been known to relieve symptoms related to chronic pain. Currently, there are trials undergoing for the approval of a spray called Sativex. This spray is equal parts THC and CBD and is already approved in Canada. It’s been known to reduce cancer-related pain and discomfort during preliminary trials. There are topicals, such as CBD and Delta-8 creams, readily available in the US already, which can be great for reducing muscle inflammation and reducing soreness!
  • Anxiety – Although anxiety is not something that plagues a certain age group, older adults are often prone to experiencing anxiety. Although Delta-9 THC has been associated with producing feelings of anxiety or paranoia when used with some users, especially at high doses, its Delta-8 THC counterpart is known to be less likely to do this (one of the many reasons some users prefer Delta-8 THC to Delta-9). In fact, people often use cannabis products to relieve symptoms related to anxiety. One study was completed where several participants received 25 milligrams of CBD (mg) daily. After two months of use, around 78 percent of participants reported relief in anxiety symptoms.
  • Sleep – Cannabis may be beneficial for older adults because as you age , the body produces less melatonin, which is a hormone to help promote sleep. Michelle Sexton, ND (naturopathic doctor) helps people incorporate cannabis into their routines to help with conditions like insomnia. She believes that people who use cannabis to relieve sleep-related symptoms of their conditions sleep longer and don’t wake as much.
